Travelers Rest is one of Upstate's most scenic, and low key areas. You get a walkable downtown with genuinely good food and coffee, the Swamp Rabbit Trail running right through it (22 miles of paved trail connecting you to Greenville by bike), and... the Blue Ridge Mountains rising just north for weekend hiking, waterfalls, and cooler summer air. Greenville proper is 15 minutes south when you want a bigger night out, but you're close enough to the mountains that Caesars Head, Table Rock, and DuPont are all easy day trips. It's the rare small town that isn't sleepy but is cheap on the wallet compared to Asheville, and has real community energy without the traffic.
