OK Option for Short to Mid-term
PROS: Nice staff, quality building & finishes, gorgeous windows, storage & small downstairs gym, pet friendly.
CONS: Highest rent in the area, nickeled & dimed for extra costs, less desirable location compared to BH Arts District or downtown St Joseph, subject to 1% city income tax as City of BH resident.
Inventory is notoriously limited in the SJ / BH area and this is one of the only “nicer” options to consider. We had a positive overall experience, but some key things fell short of our... expectations. The building renovations were done very well and finishes are nicer than others in the area, but 1 BR / 1 BA at 15-20% higher rent than the 2 BR / 2 BA Quarternote Lofts in the BH Arts District makes Saranac a very questionable value. Also prepare to get nickeled & dimed – extra charge for a staff member to be present if moving in/out on a weekend, charged to change a light bulb (15 foot ceilings and a ladder will not be provided to do so yourself), charged for normal wear & tear markings, etc. Conversely, we went without a functioning oven for about a month after moving in and were not compensated in any way. The storage and small gym on the 1st floor are a nice plus, as are the beautiful windows in the unit. However, be prepared for the higher utility bills to accompany the large windows. This property is worth considering (especially if you have a pet), just know it will be the most expensive option you see and you should plan on some petty charges.
