More like 3.5 stars - clean, peaceful, cheap, but with downsides
I lived at the Heights for a one year term, and I wanted to give an honest, well rounded review so you know what you're getting into.
The Heights was a nice, clean place to live. I really liked how close it was to the park, their gym services (small but well rounded equipment selection), and the safety of the complex. They have really good ethernet speed that was available most of the time, but went down for about 24 hours 4 times this year. In my apartment specifically, the appliances (washer,... dryer, and dishwasher) were better than any other apartment complex in Ruston. And the monthly price with bills was very manageable.
On the downside, we had a significant mold problem in our apartment due to the above apartments AC unit leaking down the walls. Their solution was often to spray the black spots with bleach, but it would pop up in other locations along the ceiling and in the walls. When asked if there was anything else that could be done, we were told that this was the extent of their abilities. Both my cat and I were prescribed steroids for our sinuses the length of our stay. Our health issues cleared up significantly after leaving.
In addition to the mold, there was a dust issue in my bedroom and the common spaces. It seemed to accumulate everywhere, despite keeping up with dusting. I bought a large air filter, and that helped keep it manageable. They also replace your air filter for you, which helps a bit, too.
In terms of space, the 4-bedroom apartments are a little cramped. It was hard managing space in the fridge and freezer living with 3 other individuals, especially because we all cooked. I definitely recommend getting a mini fridge. In the kitchen, our cabinets were also cramped. However, there is a lot of personal storage to help make up for it.
Lastly, towards the end of the year, they were very transparent about the move-out procedures, which I really appreciate. Sometimes apartments will keep your security deposit if you don't follow the procedure exactly, but the Heights was forthright through the process. We cleaned our apartment top to bottom, including all the appliances, cabinets, floors, bathrooms, and bedrooms, and we were all able to get our full deposit back without much hassle.
I enjoyed living here, it was quiet and peaceful and clean, and was cheap enough getting through college. But please make sure to inspect your SPECIFIC unit before signing that lease!
